Turn existing buried piping information into a practical, prioritized action plan

Not every buried line carries the same risk

Industrial facilities may have miles of buried firewater, cooling water, raw water, process sewer, oily water, stormwater, and other critical piping. Each line has a different likelihood of failure and a different consequence if it does fail, yet most facilities do not have the time or budget to inspect every line at once.

Without a clear way to compare those risks, priorities often become reactive. The most recent failure, loudest concern, or easiest project to fund can take precedence over the systems that pose the greatest risk. Motivo’s System Prioritization Plan gives your team a clear basis for deciding what requires attention now, what should be monitored, and what can reasonably be deferred.

Motivo uses the information your facility already has, including system drawings, maintenance records, pipe age, materials, service, operating history, known failures, and input from experienced personnel. Each system or pipeline segment is evaluated based on the likelihood that it will fail and the consequence if it does. Likelihood may be influenced by age, material, operating conditions, repair history, environmental exposure, and known problem areas. Consequence considers potential impacts on personnel safety, environmental compliance, production, fire protection, product containment, emergency repair costs, and facility operations.
 

The results place each line into a practical action category. Higher-priority lines are identified for near-term inspection, repair, rehabilitation, replacement, or further engineering. Other lines may be monitored or deferred while resources are focused where they can reduce the most risk.

Turn the ranking into a long-term roadmap

Motivo translates the results into a phased 5 to 15 year roadmap for inspection, maintenance, rehabilitation, replacement, and capital planning. The plan gives operations, maintenance, engineering, and leadership a shared basis for making buried piping decisions and helps replace emergency-driven spending with a more predictable investment strategy.
 

Depending on the scope, the plan may include an organized system inventory, a risk ranking for each pipeline segment, a visual likelihood and consequence matrix, recommended actions, targeted inspection priorities, planning-level budgets, and documentation of assumptions or information gaps.

Perfect records are not required to begin. Missing or uncertain information is documented and may become part of the recommended inspection or data-gathering plan. The System Prioritization Plan does not replace inspection. It identifies where inspection will provide the greatest value, and the findings can then be used to validate assumptions, update rankings, and determine the appropriate response. As inspections are completed, repairs are made, and conditions change, the roadmap can be updated to keep priorities current.
